CBD for Sleep

As we are becoming more educated on how CBD works in the body, we are learning about CBD benefits including using CBD for sleep.

Millions of Americans report issues with insomnia and sleeplessness. We are learning that the endocannabinoid system plays a role in maintaining certain body functions, such as mood, appetite, and sleep including regulating circadian rhythms.

Within the endocannabinoid system is a network of cannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system. According to the American Sleep Association, “…cannabinoids attach to these receptors and have various effects. As far as how they may affect sleep, some research indicates that the cannabinoid CBD may interact with specific receptors potentially affecting the sleep/wake cycle.

Additionally, CBD may also decrease anxiety and pain, which can both interfere with restful sleep. By reducing certain symptoms, it’s also possible that sleep may improve.”

How can CBD help me sleep?

1. Reduce Anxiety

A common cause of insomnia is anxiety and stress. CBD is being shown to help anxiety-related disorders in a variety of causes. Additionally, a large case series review found that CBD may be beneficial for anxiety-related disorders specifically related to an increase in sleep quality.

2. Regulate Circadian Rhythms

CBD has been shown to increase sleep time with less frequent awakenings in early studies. Users experience no disruptions to the normal sleep-wake cycle with the use of CBD. This is because it regulates the body’s sleep/wake cycles, helping to promote wakefulness during daytime and relaxation at night.

3. Manage Pain

For those who struggle with sleeplessness due to chronic or acute pain, CBD offers a welcome alternative to pharmaceutical pain relievers. CBD affects CB2 receptors to mediate the amount of cytokine, a pain-receptor substance released by the immune cells, reducing inflammation and pain which could cause interruptions to the most restorative stages of deep sleep.

How to use CBD

Everybody and body is different, so experimentation is key in finding what works for you. CBD can have a variety of effects depending on dosage, product and time of day as well as individual body chemistry.

Edibles and oils tend to release CBD more slowly, helping you stay asleep longer. Try CBD an hour before bedtime and ensure to promote a quality rest by also turning off electronics, and limit exercise within that same hour before bed.
