CBD for Anxiety

If you struggle with chronic stress or anxiety, you may be considering using CBD to help. While research on cannabidiol oil (CBD oil) is still in its infancy, there is mounting evidence to suggest that some people can get relief from anxiety when using CBD with few or no side effects.

Medical treatment for anxiety traditionally consists of prescription drugs with a high likelihood of misuse: benzodiazepines, like Xanax and Klonopin. Many people are opting to use CBD to help alleviate stress and anxiety instead of prescription drugs.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol. CBD is one of many Phytocannabinoids that naturally occur in Hemp and are known for supporting the body and mind in many ways. CBD comes from the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant.

Cannabidiol is a chemical compound in the cannabis plant. It’s a naturally occurring substance that is not mind impairing — meaning it won’t impair or impact your mental state of being, or get you “high”.

Does CBD help my Anxiety?

People interested in managing their anxiety with CBD oil should look exclusively at research on cannabidiol, not generalized studies of medical marijuana. Although there are fewer studies on cannabidiol specifically, the preliminary research is promising.

Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is one of the most common anxiety conditions and is associated with impairment in social adjustment to the usual aspects of daily life, increased disability, dysfunction, and a loss of productivity. A small study, published in 2011, found that cannabidiol could reduce symptoms of social anxiety in people with SAD.

Additionally, this recent study showed that pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety during public speaking events.

While all of the current studies are shorter-term, and larger and longer clinical studies will be needed to assist with dosing and appropriate use of CBD, the results are showing overall help in managing anxiety.

What are the Risks of using CBD for Anxiety?

Studies into cannabidiol specifically, have found few or no negative side effects.

This means that CBD oil may be a good option for people who cannot tolerate the side effects of other medications for anxiety, including addiction.

Hemp-derived CBD products with a THC content lower than 0.3% are legal on the federal level but are not legal under some state laws. Be sure to look up CBD laws in your state and ensure your products are lab tested to ensure labeling is accurate. If you aren’t sure what you should be taking, be sure to consult your doctor to help identify the appropriate dosage.

The role of cannabidiol as a treatment for anxiety disorders remains unclear, as more long-term studies are required to assess the benefits and risks, however, initial studies seem promising.
